Abstract

Being a sole provider of the family greatly impacts solo parents, especially in facing financial challenges, affecting them emotionally, mentally, and physically. This study explored the experiences of solo parent breadwinners and uncovered their resilience through the innovative methodology of photovoice. This study utilized qualitative research approach with eight participants who were selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through photos and interviews. The study took place in Ozamiz City. The themes which emerged from the study include income instability and job security, balancing childcare and financial obligations, and difficulty in managing finances of solo parents who have been the sole provider of the family. Also, the themes which emerged from the solo parents’ strategies and coping mechanisms were creating a budget plan and prioritizing essential needs, seeking for family and external support systems, and creating a passive income to save for future needs. Solo parent breadwinners actively sought support for their needs, employed diverse coping mechanisms, and desired recognition from authorities amidst financial stress and societal pressure. This study highlighted the financial challenges faced by solo parents and the strategies they employ to navigate all financial struggles they encountered. It is recommended that it is important to implement social and financial support systems tailored to the unique challenges of solo parents, such as flexible employment opportunities, childcare assistance, and targeted financial aid, to help alleviate the economic pressures they face.
