Heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, arsenic, chromium, nickel, copper, and lead occur naturally but become toxic when they accumulate in organisms. This study quantitatively detects and compares the concentrations of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in
sediment collected from coastal zones of Barangay Malaubang and Pulot, Panguil Bay, Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, to identify possible anthropogenic sources of contamination. Using Shimadzu AA-7000 Manual and EPA Method 3050 B for Acid Digestion of Sediments, Sludges and Soils as reference methods, through the
instrumentation of Flame Atomic Spectroscopy, the concentrations of Pb and Cd from samples collected in both barangays were determined. Pb was measured to have an average concentration of 4.06 mg/kg in Brgy. Pulot, and an average of 1.77 mg/kg in Brgy
Malaubang. Cd had a lower concentration in both barangays compared to the reporting limit, yielding an undetected measurement for both barangays. Using Interim Sediment
Quality Guidelines and NOAA SQuiRT Report, both parameters were identified to have no biological effect in its surroundings due to their low concentration. - Keywords
