- Abstract
- The increasing concerns regarding the side effects, limited availability, and possible drug resistance associated with commercial deworming drugs have encouraged researchers to explore safer and more affordable plant-based alternatives. This study first evaluated the toxicity and then investigated the in vitro anthelmintic activity of the ethanolic bark extract of Sesbania grandiflora against Pontoscolex corethrurus. Bark samples were collected, air-dried, ground into powder, and extracted through maceration using 70% ethanol. Toxicity testing was conducted using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Assay (BSLA) with Artemia salina nauplii to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50) of the extract. The results showed an LC50 value of 1.79 mg/mL, indicating that the extract has low toxicity and may be relatively safe for biological use. After the toxicity evaluation, the anthelmintic activity of the extract was assessed by measuring the time to paralysis and time to death of Pontoscolex corethrurus exposed to different extract concentrations (5, 10, and 15 mg/mL). Albendazole was used as the positive control, while distilled water served as the negative control. The findings showed that the extract exhibited concentration-dependent anthelmintic activity, where higher concentrations produced faster paralysis and death of the worms. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test revealed significant differences among treatment groups (p < 0.05). Overall, the findings suggest that the ethanolic bark extract of S. grandiflora possesses promising anthelmintic properties with relatively low toxicity.
