- Abstract
- Despite the presence of bioactive phytochemicals reported in many medicinal plants, only limited studies have investigated the antibacterial potential of Melanolepis multiglandulosa (Reinw.ex Blume) Rchb. & Zoll) leaf extract against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. This study evaluated the phytochemical composition and antibacterial activity of the plant using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) and the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method. GC–MS analysis of the ethanolic leaf extract identified 48 compounds, of which 43.75% were reported to have antimicrobial activity, 27.08% anti-inflammatory activity, 18.75% antioxidant activity, and 8.33% antibacterial activity. However, the ethanolic leaf extract at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% showed no zone of inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 under the conditions employed in the study. This may be due to the natural resistance of the bacterium, limited extraction efficiency, poor diffusion of phytochemicals in the agar medium, and the use of Nutrient Agar instead of Mueller–Hinton Agar. Although no antibacterial activity was observed, the presence of bioactive compounds suggests that Melanolepis multiglandulosa still has potential medicinal value and supports the need for further studies using other bacterial isolates and improved testing methods
