Abstract

Adolescent pregnancy remains a pressing global concern, with a significant proportion of these pregnancies being unintended and often resulting in abortion. Adolescent motherhood not only reflects gaps in reproductive health education and access but also leads to profound social, economic, and health consequences. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge on reproductive health among adolescent mothers in selected barangays in Ozamiz City in terms of contraceptive methods and sexual health education, and its implication on their pregnancy prevention strategies in terms of use of contraceptive methods and behavioral practices. Anchored on the Health Belief Model and the Theory of Planned Behavior, the study employed a quantitative, descriptive-correlational design. Respondents included were 70 adolescent mothers aged 13 to 19 years, selected through complete enumeration sampling. Data were collected using a validated researcher-made questionnaire. Mean, Standard Deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient were used for data analysis. The results showed that adolescent mothers have high levels of knowledge on reproductive health and good pregnancy prevention strategies. Moreover, the adolescent mothers’ level of knowledge on contraceptive methods and sexual health education influenced their pregnancy prevention strategies in terms of behavioral practices but not on the use of contraceptive methods. These findings seek to inform health workers and policymakers in the development of specific reproductive health programs that enable young people to make informed decisions, thereby decreasing the rate of teenage pregnancies.
