Abstract

The use of body-worn camera (BWC) is now an essential policing technology with the mandate of improving transparency, accountability, and collaboration between the public and the police. This study was conducted to investigate the use of BWC by police, including its advantages, drawbacks, and relevance in professional practice. Through qualitative case study research design, data were collected from semi-structured interviews with a total of ten (10) purposively chosen police officers in Ozamiz City who regularly use BWCs during their field operations. Data were analyzed using Yin’s six-step case study data analysis process, which includes planning, designing, preparation, collecting, analyzing and sharing. From the analysis, six major themes emerged: enhancement of transparency, accountability, and professionalism; strengthening of evidence collection and legal processes; legal, ethical, and privacy concerns; technical limitations of body-worn cameras; proper and consistent use of body-worn cameras; and awareness of professional conduct and accountability. The findings highlight the significant role of BWCs in promoting transparency, accountability, ethical policing, effective evidence handling, and public trust. Despite these advantages, challenges related to privacy concerns, technical limitations, and inconsistent implementation remain barriers to optimal utilization. Overall, the study concludes that BWCs, when properly implemented and sustained, can substantially enhance police operations and police–community relations. The study recommends the establishment of clear policies, continuous training, standardized deployment, and technological improvements to maximize the benefits and ensure the sustainable use of body-worn cameras in policing.
