- Abstract
- The rise of burnout and compassion fatigue among fourth-year nursing students is a pressing issue in both academic and clinical contexts. This phenomenon affects their health and overall well-being and influences their academic performance. The study aimed to examine the levels of burnout and compassion fatigue among nursing students and their relationship with academic performance. The study used a quantitative, descriptive-correlational design. There were 77 fourth-year nursing students from a higher education institution in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, Philippines. They were selected through purposive, non-random sampling. To measure burnout, compassion fatigue, and academic performance, researcher-made questionnaires were utilized. The data were analyzed using the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient. The findings revealed that fourth-year nursing students have moderate levels of burnout, but they experience high levels of physical burnout than emotional and mental burnout They also experienced moderate levels of compassion fatigue. The overall academic performance of the fourth-year nursing students in both Related Learning Experience (RLE) and lecture was satisfactory. Moreover, their levels of burnout and compassion fatigue were not significantly correlated with their academic performance. Despite the study indicating that the levels of burnout and compassion fatigue among fourth-year nursing students were moderate, these students demonstrated resilience in maintaining satisfactory academic performance. Nevertheless, it is essential to identify and implement targeted interventions to mitigate burnout and compassion fatigue, supporting both their academic success and overall well-being.
