- Abstract
- Particularly for women in later life, aging is a very personal and complex experience that touches on physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects. To better understand how female senior citizen retirees navigate the reality of aging, this transcendental phenomenological study examined their lived experiences in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur. Using Moustakas' phenomenological framework and Letty G. Kuan's Graceful Aging Theory as a guide, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with three retired female educators to learn about the significance they place on their aging process. Navigating bodily changes via adaptation, emotional sensitivity and psychological adaptations, faith and spiritual anchoring, and coping through relationships and mutual support were the five main themes that surfaced. The results showed that individuals demonstrated resilience through self-care, a solid spiritual foundation, and meaningful connections despite physical limitations, emotional changes, and shifts in social roles. Their familial ties and community participation bolstered their psychological well-being, while their faith provided them with a sense of purpose and serenity. The study highlights the importance of gender-sensitive, holistic approaches to aging that consider social connectivity, spirituality, mental well-being, and physical health. To improve the quality of life for older women, these findings can inform healthcare practices, legislative decisions, and caregiving strategies. In the end, the study highlights older women's ability to age with power, dignity, and purpose by elevating their voices.
