Abstract

The Philippines, highly susceptible to geological and hydrometeorological disasters, demands proficient medical support for effective disaster response. This study assesses the disaster response capabilities of fourth-year nursing students by evaluating their factual and procedural knowledge, readiness in assessment, planning, and implementation, and self-efficacy as caregivers, educators, and case managers, addressing a critical gap in nursing education. It also examines the relationships between knowledge, readiness, and self-efficacy, while identifying key predictors of self efficacy to enhance nursing education for disaster response. Anchored in Benner's Novice to Expert Theory, Roy's Adaptation Model, and Jennings-Sanders Disaster Management Model. Using a quantitative descriptive-correlational design, data were gathered from 118 fourth-year nursing students at a private university in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, during the 2024-2025 academic year, selected via stratified random sampling. Validated researcher made questionnaires assessed knowledge, readiness, and self-efficacy. Data analysis utilized mean, standard deviation, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis. Results indicate very high knowledge and self-efficacy, with high readiness. Significant positive correlations exist between knowledge, readiness, and self-efficacy, with procedural knowledge and implementation as key predictors. The findings emphasize the need for hands-on training and simulations in nursing curricula to enhance readiness and confidence, supporting policy reforms for mandatory disaster education. Practical training and structured disaster education into nursing curricula to enhance students' preparedness and confidence.
