- Abstract
- Sleep quality significantly influences the physical, mental, and cognitive functioning of nursing students, particularly those facing academic and clinical stressors. Poor sleep has been associated with heightened emotional instability, increased stress and anxiety, and diminished cognitive performance, all of which may potentially affect academic achievement. This study explored the relationships among sleep quality, mental health, and academic performance among 146 third-year nursing students at Misamis University, using a descriptive-correlational research design. Data revealed that while participants generally exhibited poor sleep quality and suboptimal mental health, they maintained above-average academic performance. Statistically significant positive correlations were observed between sleep quality components, namely sleep duration, efficacy, and disturbances, and mental health indicators such as emotions, anxiety and stress, mood swings, and cognitive impairment. However, sleep quality did not correlate significantly with academic performance, suggesting that other factors also influence academic performance. Based on these findings, it is recommended that students, instructors, institutions, and the broader community work collaboratively to promote sleep hygiene and mental wellness through structured programs, proactive support systems, and awareness campaigns. Future research should expand to include diverse student populations and examine mediating factors such as lifestyle habits and digital media use.
