Abstract

Aging is a complex process involving physical, psychological, and social dimensions that increases older adults’ susceptibility to respiratory infections, making timely flu and pneumococcal vaccination essential. This quantitative, descriptive-correlational study, guided by the Health Belief Model, examined knowledge, perceptions, and compliance with flu and pneumococcal vaccination among 192 elderly residents of a selected barangay in Ozamiz City using stratified random sampling. A researcher-developed questionnaire was used on a 4-point Likert scale to assess knowledge and perceptions. Data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, and binary logistic regression. Findings revealed a very high level of knowledge among respondents, particularly regarding vaccine availability. Perceptions were generally positive, with high perceived susceptibility and benefits, though some barriers remained. Flu vaccination compliance was slightly higher than pneumococcal vaccination. A significant positive relationship was found between knowledge of vaccine availability and compliance, while perceived benefits showed a paradoxical negative association with vaccination behavior. This study suggests that the elderly may proactively engage in community health programs. In contrast, public health agencies may expand campaigns that address their fears and misconceptions to increase vaccination compliance.
