- Abstract
- A Storm Surge can be a catastrophic event, destroying homes and businesses and spreading various diseases along the way. Through the Study, victims' recollections of how such incidents impacted their way of life and means of subsistence can be heard. The objectives of the Study were to explore the health and well-being of individuals in the aftermath of the storm surge. The Study is conducted using a hermeneutic-phenomenological design. The Study conducted a semi-structured interview with 7 participants who had lived experiences of the storm in December 2022, when a typhoon struck and affected the lives of people in Oroquieta City. For the sampling technique used, it was through a Purposive and then a Snowball sampling method. It was conducted through a semi-structured interview guided by van Manen's Existential Lifeworlds. The data gathered yielded five themes that relate to each of van Manen's Lifeworlds, namely: Resilience and Redefinition; The Body as a Site for Trauma and Vulnerability; The Ruin of Everyday Life; Multi-dimensional Disruption of Daily Life; and Human Connection Through Care and Mutual Support. These five themes are the results of the affected participants' lived experiences of the aftermath of a storm surge. The Study highlights the critical role of community support and equitable disaster response in fostering resilience, while emphasizing the importance of rebuilding efforts that restore both spaces and a sense of normalcy. People should collaboratively implement inclusive, comprehensive disaster preparedness and recovery strategies that address both physical and mental health, strengthen social support, improve infrastructure, and continuously evaluate long-term outcomes to enhance resilience and well-being.
