- Abstract
- Nursing students experience stress during their theoretical practice, which is why effective coping strategies are used to achieve better marks regarding their academic performance. This study evaluates the perceived level of stress and coping strategies of nursing students and how it affects their academics. This study was conducted in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, that offered a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. This study is descriptive-correlational quantitative research that utilized purposive sampling. The researchers selected nursing students from each year level and gathered the population of qualified respondents. Aided by the Raosoft formula, 247 nursing students were chosen that fit the criteria. The study utilized a researcher-made questionnaire validated by the Cronbach alpha’s formula. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the significant relationship between variables. The results shown are based on the data gathered; most nursing students experience high perceived levels of stress and all good coping strategies. They viewed stress as a pushing factor affecting their academic performance positively or negatively. Also, acknowledging that coping strategies help nursing students handle stress indicates that it enhances effective outcomes on their academic performance. However, although respondents had high perceived stress levels and good coping strategies, it somehow did not affect their academic performance even though it was poor. Thus, the study implies a need for stress management programs, workshops on effective coping strategies, and achievable remedial actions for nursing students with poor academic performances.
