Abstract

The rapid integration of digital technology into children’s daily lives has increased their exposure to cybercrime risks, making parental awareness and monitoring essential in promoting online safety. This study aimed to determine the relationship between parental awareness, monitoring practices, and children’s online safety behavior in relation to cybercrime risk. A quantitative descriptive–correlational research design was employed and conducted in one of the barangays in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, involving 208 parent-respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered using a researcher-made structured survey questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. Findings revealed that parents demonstrated a very high level of awareness of cybercrime risks, particularly cyberbullying, identity theft, and online scams; however, monitoring practices were inconsistently applied and largely relied on verbal reminders rather than technological tools. Results further showed a positive but limited relationship between parental awareness and children’s online safety behavior, indicating that higher parental awareness contributes to safer online practices among children. The study concludes that despite high parental awareness, gaps in consistent monitoring remain, emphasizing the need to strengthen parental digital literacy and family-based online safety initiatives. It is recommended that schools, local government units, and community agencies collaborate in conducting digital parenting workshops and community seminars to enhance parental involvement and reduce children’s exposure to cybercrime risks
