Abstract

Disasters are a significant challenge for healthcare systems globally, making disaster preparedness and awareness crucial for healthcare professionals, including nursing students. Self-efficacy, which refers to an individual’s belief in their ability to perform tasks, plays a critical role in nursing students' willingness to confidently engage in disaster response. This study aimed to explore the relationship between self-efficacy and nursing students’ willingness to participate in disaster response in Ozamiz City, Philippines. A quantitative, descriptive- correlational design was used, with surveys administered to 95 fourth-year nursing students during the 2023-2024 academic year. Research-made questionnaires measured both self-efficacy and Willingness to respond on a four-point Likert scale. This study focuses on filling the preceding gaps in the literature, enhancing understanding of the effect of self-efficacy on proactivity during disasters. This study used a quantitative, descriptive-correlational research design to assess self- efficacy and willingness of nursing students in disaster situations. The study found a positive correlation between students' self-efficacy and their willingness to participate in disaster response efforts. This indicates that students who feel more confident in their abilities are more likely to volunteer for disaster response. The findings suggest the importance of integrating more disaster response education into nursing curricula to better prepare students for real-world disaster scenarios. Enhancing students’ knowledge and preparedness could increase their readiness to act effectively during disasters. The study emphasizes the need to strengthen disaster-related content in nursing education to foster greater confidence and proactive involvement among future nurses in disaster situations.
