With the global elderly population on the rise, gaining insights into the determinants of their Health-Related Quality of Life has become increasingly important. By examining these factors, the research aims to contribute to the understanding of how SES and sleep quality influence the overall well-being of the elderly. This study investigated the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and sleep quality in relation to Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among elderly residents of a barangay in Ozamiz City. With an increasing elderly population globally, understanding the factors affecting their quality of life is essential. Despite generally good sleep quality, significant daytime dysfunction indicated underlying challenges. The study identified a strong positive correlation between higher SES and better sleep quality, as well as between sleep quality and HRQoL. Additionally, higher SES is significantly associated with better sleep quality
and HRQoL across various dimensions, including physical functioning, emotional well- being, and social functioning. This research underscored the importance of addressing socioeconomic disparities to improve sleep quality and HRQoL among the elderly. The insights gained can inform the development of targeted interventions and policies aimed at enhancing the well-being of aging populations in urban settings. The researchers recommend that the Department of Health (DOH) implement health literacy programs for older adults, focusing on sleep hygiene, chronic disease management, and stress reduction.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) should create employment and financial support initiatives for the elderly to improve their socioeconomic status. Local Government Units (LGUs) are encouraged to develop community-based programs that
offer social engagement, physical activities, and mental stimulation. Healthcare institutions should train professionals on elderly care, particularly in managing sleep disturbances and socioeconomic factors. Mental health services need to integrate support tailored for elderly individuals. Nursing schools should enhance training on communication with elderly patients. Future research should focus on evaluating tailored sleep interventions, exploring elderly perspectives on socioeconomic status and sleep quality, and investigating causes of sleep disturbances to inform targeted interventions. This study utilized a quantitative descriptive correlational design to examine the relationship between two or more variables without manipulating them.
