Abstract
Conventional medicine remains the primary treatment choice today. However, the use of
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is rising, particularly among older adults with chronic illnesses seeking relief from side effects of conventional treatments. Rooted in cultural traditions, personal beliefs, and a desire for holistic well-being, many older adults incorporate CAM to complement conventional care for a more comprehensive approach to health. This study assessed the perceptions of CAM use among adults aged 60 and above, focusing on perceived benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy. It also examined their adherence to CAM safety practices and explored how perceptions influence adherence. Conducted in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur, the study involved 138 participants selected through purposive and stratified random sampling. Data was gathered using a pilot-tested, standardized survey questionnaire. Results showed a strong positive correlation between perceived benefits and adherence to safety practices (r = 0.64, p = 0.00). A weaker but significant positive correlation was found between perceived barriers and safety adherence (r = 0.25, p = 0.00). Perceived self-efficacy also demonstrated a strong positive correlation with safety adherence (r = 0.70, p = 0.00). The study concludes that enhancing perceptions of CAM benefits and self-efficacy improves adherence to safety practices, while addressing barriers is essential to promoting safe CAM use. These findings highlight the need for better regulation, education, and integration of CAM within healthcare systems to support older adults' well being.
