- Abstract
- This study assessed the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation and Azolla inclusion (0–15%) on broiler growth performance, feed intake, carcass traits, and economic performance. Farmers currently have little knowledge about the practical application and fermentation of Azolla as a feed ingredient in broiler production, despite the growing interest in alternative feed resources to lower production costs. A fully randomized design with a 4 × 2 factorial layout was employed. The findings indicated that while higher inclusion levels tended to result in somewhat lower final weight, weight gain, and profitability, Azolla inclusion had no discernible impact on growth performance, feed consumption, carcass characteristics, or economic factors. This suggests that adding Azolla to broiler feed won't negatively affect the birds' overall performance. Saccharomyces cerevisiae supplementation, on the other hand, only marginally and non-significantly enhanced feed consumption, carcass characteristics, and economic returns, but it considerably increased final weight and weight gain. This implies that, under the study's settings, yeast has a favorable impact on growth performance but no effect on other measures. Across all assessed variables, the interaction between Azolla incorporation and yeast fermentation was not significant, suggesting that there are neither antagonistic nor synergistic effects when the two treatments are combined. In conclusion, while yeast supplementation may improve growth performance but does not significantly improve feed efficiency, carcass characteristics, or economic profitability, Azolla can be used as a feed ingredient up to 15% without detrimental consequences. The results of this study could provide farmers with more details on the potential application of fermented Azolla as a cost-effective, alternative feed source for broiler production.
